Citrine is named from the French name for lemon for its lemon color. The color can range from yellow to gold to orange brown shades. Sometimes the darker colors are called Madeira citrine after the color of wine and is the most valued color but many people prefer the lighter lemony color.Most citrine is mined in Brazil particularly from the Serra mine in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The Iraa mine produces about 1/3 of the Serra mine. It can be confused with Topaz – a separate mineral. It is considered an alternative birthstone to Topaz for November. Most Citrine started its life as amethyst that was heated to turn the color to gold. It should also be kept away from prolonged exposure to strong light or heat. Gem quality citrine is rare and found in Brazil, Spain, Madagascar and the former U.S.S.R.
